Something happen to your car? Need to
know what to do in an accident? Find out what to do in the event of
certain auto insurance claims with these car insurance FAQ.
What should I do if I get into an
accident?
Hopefully, you’ll never be
involved in an accident, but if you are, keep these general
guidelines in mind.
At the scene…
- Get medical help if anyone
is injured.
- Phone the police so that
they can help with the situation.
- Allow medical professionals
and/or the police to control the accident scene.
- Discuss the accident only
with the police.
- Do not admit fault to
anyone.
- Gather information. Get the
names, addresses, phone numbers, and auto insurance
information of all parties involved. Be sure to get contact
information from witnesses as well.
- If you have a camera with
you, take photos to document vehicle damage, the
intersection where the accident occurred, skid marks, and
any other features of the accident scene.
- Above all, try to remain
calm.
Always remember that, if another
party to the accident or another auto insurance company contacts
you, do not discuss the accident with them and do not agree to
make a recorded statement. Simply refer any questions about the
accident to your claims representative.
If you follow these tips, it’s
easier to take care of your auto insurance claim, which means
that your auto insurance company can get you back on the road
faster.
What should I do if my car is
vandalized?
The important thing to remember
with any act of vandalism is to leave your car the way it is
until the police and/or our appraiser have the opportunity to
inspect it.
Notify the police immediately, so
that they can issue a police report documenting the damage. This
also helps local authorities keep track of vandalism in a given
area, which helps them do more to protect you and your community
in the future.
It’s always a good idea to
document vehicle damage. If you have a camera with you when you
discover the vandalism, take photos of the damage.
What should I do if my car is
stolen?
If your car is stolen, contact
the police immediately. After you contact the authorities,
report the incident by contacting your insurance agent as soon
as possible.
Our claims representatives will
immediately start the process of getting you back on the road.
They can also help you obtain a rental car, if that's included
in your auto insurance coverage.
What if something is stolen from my
car?
If belongings are stolen from
your car, immediately report the theft to the police and your
insurance agent. When you talk with a claims representative, be
prepared to describe your loss in detail. This is easier if you
have receipts for, and detailed descriptions of, the stolen
goods. Such preparation also helps speed the claims process.
Please note that items stolen
from your car may not be covered by auto insurance coverage.
However, your renters or
homeowners insurance often covers such losses. Check all
your insurance policies for coverage details so that you know
whom to call if a theft occurs.
Remember that it’s always best to
avoid keeping valuables in your car
